MERDEKA ! ( 58 years later... )

''Shall it fly ever high proudly in the face of adversity with grit and never say die attitude''

It's that time of the year again. Two types of Malaysians rejoice in the sight of the date, 31st August on their calendar, some of them cry with tears of joy for the one extra legit holiday in a long rigorous year and some simply relish the date to remember of our ancestors' fight for the long-awaited independence about 58 odd years ago. Me ? A bit of both, really.

Historically, Malaysia were under countless colonial rule by many European powers and Japan at one point. Our economy was exploited by our former European masters and the right to rule in our very own country was absolutely taken away , leaving Malaysians being foreigners in their very own country.

That all changed after Tunku Abdul Rahman along with his most trusted aides went to London by plane to negotiate a deal to get our freedom. They accomplished their mission succesfully and on 31st August 1957, the famous words of Merdeka were shouted out in unison by the crowd and the man himself, Tunku. And the rest as they say, was history.

It was never going to be smooth sailing for our relatively young sovereign country but throughout the 50 plus years, Malaysians had successfully braved the storms together regardless of races , religion and gender. Alas, the biggest storm heading to us may very well be caused by the man that is our Prime Minister, Mr. Najib himself.

Embroiled in the 1MDB and corruption controversy, he has succesfully made himself one of the most unpopular man in Malaysia by the citizens of Malaysia. His fanbase was already slowly dwindling after the last general elections and now it could truly be dead. He won't quit though to the anguish of some Malaysians.

Approaching our annual Independence Day celebrations, Bersih 4 has declared a rally which ends just one day before our 58th Independence Day. The timing could not be any more better for the Bersih 4 rally to happen. The Bersih 4 rally aim for clean and fair elections , government and basically to change the whole country in a positive way. What better time to hold the rally, then it being near Merdeka celebrations which celebrate the birth of our country.

I undoubtedly support the rally. Our country has been absolutely shit for too long. No matter what Najib says to the government-controlled media, even he can't deny that Malaysia has hit rock-bottom in terms of confidence in the country. Our currency has dropped so low that even CGPA jokes has become overused in the space of days. Freedom of speech remains non-existent although it says so in the fucking Constitution which enrages me even more. Stupid ministers spewing out racial comments every fucking day but then in the most double standard way possible, tells everyone not to join Bersih 4 because that could harm country's harmony.

Fuck off.

It's people like you dimwits that give everyone else even more reason to join the rally.

At the end of the day, people always ask me why do I still feel patriotic despite of the absolutely sadly pathetic things that happen in our country. And it's simple. Because it's my fucking country. I serve for Malaysia. Not for Najib, or any of his ministers and definitely not for the government either.

Malaysia has given me so many reason to smile in these 18 years of my life. I have a lovely home, made so many countless friends and created plenty of lasting memories that are absolutely priceless. I would have never had any of that if I lived somewhere else. The food I eat on a daily basis. Oh god. Malaysian food is something to be proud of. Something to really thank Malaysia about. Bah Kut Teh, Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, Hokkien Mee and so much more, You can't get that migrating to Australia, can ya?

Few simple words, born and bred here. Yes, I am a Chinese but that is absolutely irrelevant if it takes away from the fact that my ancestors and I was born and bred here. We never lived a day as citizens of China and I personally never will. I'm as Malaysian as any goddamn Malay guy out there and you better believe it.

We may not be of the same race but we have one thing in common. Malaysians, we all are. And you better believe it. Chinese and Indians were once just immigrants on this soil but now we live together as citizens. How fucking incredible that we have lived together for over half a century with mostly love for each other. Malaysians are simply awesome. Well, most of them. But goddamn it, that is absolutely awesome. We have so much potential.

Just because Malaysia has been in turmoil recently, it doesn't mean that Malaysia is not our beloved country anymore. Malaysia is still a great place to live. It's our home and we should love it. Anyone who doesn't love the country should leave it. Join any other country because we don't need you. Because in the end, this country demands to be loved.

Love towards the country DOES NOT mean love to the government. Far from it.

They don't own Malaysia. We do. Let's show that this year. Send them a message they will never forget. Remember  to never give up. And let's make this country great again.
